Do Not Look Away

Inspired by “Omelas” by Ursula K. Le Guin
Written during a time of great injustice

Do not look away
For I am barely here
A few specks of dust
Yet neither a single tear—

Can send me near
A grain of rice
Or a loaf of bread
The restless dead—

Rest on me instead
Through mountains high
Somewhere safe and warm
Is a garden of love—

Called the heavens above
Where thunder pours
And the angels shed tears
On this land will we—

One day hold hands
Or turn back the fighting
If for one minute we can
Maybe soon say—

I am sorry
I will not look away
I will not forget
And I will remain.
